“The Vocabulary of Comics”

“The Vocabulary of Comics” was written by Scott McCloud. The article shows that words and images can convey meanings. McCloud describes a face and how it is made up of lines, circles, and dots. We all can recognize faces. They are a part of our everyday experiences. We can recognize a face when it is extremely detailed and when it is a smiley cartoon face. McCloud explains how readers relate themselves to the image to understand it. Readers portray themselves in a complex setting to improve the reality of the situation. McCloud then goes on to explain just words, like FACE, and how it takes longer for a reader to depict the meaning of a word because all the resemblance is gone and the reader must perceive the meaning. Comics are comprised of abstract and realistic words and images. McCloud explains that no mixture of reality and abstract is right or wrong, but instead a way to express the author’s creativity.

Topic: The argument had a strong topic, abortion.

Issue: The issue is whether abortion should be legal and also if it is ethical or not.

Exigency: The exigency was the ban on partial birth abortion.

Audience: All Americans are the audience. We have the right to vote for abortion or against abortion. Also, anyone who sees the t-shirt being worn.

Message: The message is to support abortion. They want people to be pro- choice.

Medium: The medium is the t-shirt.

Writer (author, creator): The author’s of the t-shirt are Jennifer Baumgartner and Amy Richards. The two are women rights activists.

Snowboarding prices on the rise

My hobby is snowboarding. I try to go as much as possible. Ticket prices are on the rise. In the ski and snowboard colorado blog, it describes how the ticket prices for Vail and Beaver Creek have been increasing. Ticket prices are between $90-100 depending on where you go. They can be over $200 during Christmas break (December 23- January 5).

Psychology is a science

In a blog, it discusses how psychology is a science because it uses the scientific method. The distinguishing characteristics of science are testing, theory building, hypothesis generation and replication. It is very easy to navigate through. There are other links that will take you to different areas of psychology. As well as links to read about important people of psychology. They are highlighted in pink. The blog uses color. The first thing I noticed was the top of the blog. The blog was written by someone who has studied areas of psychology.

Declamation- A recitation delivered as an exercise in rhetoric.

Spurious- Lacking authenticity or validity

Propitious- Presenting favorable circumstances

Salvo- Forceful verbal or written assult

Questions:

1) Main question: what a rhetorical situation is and what characteristics are applied.

2) The purpose of this article is to re-examine the notion of rhetorical situation, to provide at least a general idea of it, and to establish it as a fundamental concern of rhetorical theory.

3) No, he would not consider those to be rhetorical utterances. A genuinely rhetorical audience is able to mediate change.

10) The audience are people who are capable of being influenced by discourse and of being mediators of change. A reader just comes across the rhetoric whereas an audience is chosen by the rhetor and is willing to be moved by the rhetoric and change because of it.

CSU gun control

A blog was posted called Colorado State University Bans CCW On Campus by Ken on January 25, 2010. It explains the view of this man. He thinks that if the ban is passed in February then “the CSU campus will now be a safer place….for rapists and other criminals, that is.” He talks about the suit that will be filed if the ban is passed because the gun ban is illegal under Colorado law.

A. What is the topic and associated issue?

The topic is segregation and the issue is how to end it.

B. What situation (s) compelled King to write “Letter”? Consider those that are immediate, historic, societal, personal

He wanted to stop segregation. He used peaceful ways to try to gain equality. He wanted to get people involved.

C. What do we know about King at the time “Letter” was written?

MLK was in Birmingham jail when he wrote the Letter for his involvement in the “Birmingham campaign” which was a peaceful protest in Birmingham against segregation.

D. What was King’s purpose in writing “Letter?” What did he want from the reader?

He wanted to convince and persuade people that segregation was wrong. Also, that peaceful protest and the breaking of unjust laws was the way to end it. And that change needed to happen now. Change wouldn’t happen on it’s own. He wanted to bring the white clergy on his side.

E. What is the claim?

Segregation is morally wrong.

F. What is the medium of “Letter”? How would it reach its audience?

It was a letter. It was to the white clergy but later published in the book, “Why we can’t wait.”

G. Who is the audienc: primary? Secondary? Tertiary? Many of your answers will be conjecture; that is fine, but you should be able to explain your reasoning in reaching your concusions.

The primary audience was the clergymen. The secondary audience were people against segregation, and the tertiary audience was anyone that read it.

Higher education budget cuts

Paul Teske posted a blog on January 25th, 2010 called How low can higher ed go? He discusses the budget cuts happening to higher education. It is easily coming to 50% cuts. Colorado is a state with a large population growth and the number of people entering and graduating college in Colorado is going to increase. In the end he states that fixing the funding for higher education requires a larger fix in the state budgetary process.

CSU in crosshairs for gun suit

In an article in The Rocky Mountain Collegian on January 27, 2010, it describes the argument occuring between lobbyists and the CSU System Board of Governors. If the CSU System Board of Governors approves a policy banning concealed weapons on campus, the university could have a $50,000 lawsuit coming at them. Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (RMGO) is a 2nd Amendment lobbyist group that will be ready to file a complaint within days of the February 23 decision calling for the ban to be repealed if approved.
